About the Artist
Jane Fouts was born and raised in Chicago.
She always wanted to study Art, but was required to major in the
more “practical” Math and Biology. Janetaught high
school for ten years before raising two beautiful children and
then spent twenty years training and writing training manuals for the
public school food service
program. She always pursued painting and drawing in spare moments.
About ten years ago Jane discovered clay, attending university classes in the evenings to gain
the technical skill needed to work in that medium. In 2000, she moved to Colorado and retired to the job
she always wanted. Jane
has sold her pottery through various art fairs in Colorado, and in
2006, her pottery was selected for the Foothills Art Center Gift shop
in Golden, CO. In her free time, Jane enjoys the
challenges of alpine gardening and her Australian Shepherds.
About the Art
She
draws inspiration for her pots and clay sculpture from 16th century
Korean forms and the things she sees when walking her dogs in Pike National Forest.
Her pottery is made from
low-fire earthenware clay. Each pot is hand-thrown, allowed to
partially dry, and then trimmed on a kick wheel. The pots are
then fired to 2014° F. Next Jane hand-paints on the glaze,
making the striped designs with a deer-tail brush and a banding wheel.
The pots are then fired again to 1830° F.
Exhibition Schedule
Jane's pottery can be seen year-round at the gift shop of the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado.
